Look around you. If you are inside, you can probably see several light fixtures. For the past 130 years, we’ve been using lights not much different from the ones Edison patented. But as ubiquitous as they are, new technologies now exist that make our light a lot more energy efficient. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use one quarter the energy of incandescent, yet the popularity of the curlicue style lamp has not significantly taken off with the individual consumer. Light emitting diode lamps (LEDs) uses 80% less energy and last up to twenty times the life of incandescent, but are probably a bit prohibitive for most to justify a wholesale conversion to the new technology. But as prices decrease, a significant amount our future lighting will come from powerful, long lasting, color corrected LEDs. We ♥ architecture because we can help companies create spaces that are not only beautifully lit, but help save energy and the environment.
