Many studies have been done which show a patient recovers faster if they have a view to nature. The added benefit to having a room with a view is you also provide a way for daylight to get into your space. It is no coincidence that what is good for the patient is also good for the environment. Recently the USGBC passed LEED for Healthcare which allows healthcare facilities a more realistic avenue to gain a LEED ratings status. As more patients become literate on the impact of the materials and systems around them, they will realize that they want to go to a facility that understands the connection between their health and the planet’s health.
If you have choice, all other aspects of care being equal, to go to a facility to where you know you will have a room with a view of nature or a room with no window, wouldn’t you always pick the room with the view? We ♥ architecture because each day we get to figure out how we can create healing spaces that don’t sicken the planet.
