For the past eight weeks, we have been participating in the Green Commute Challenge, a program sponsored by the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC). The contest encouraged commuters to use alternate forms of transportation to get to and from work — such as carpooling, biking, riding the bus and walking — and to find other ways to reduce miles driven, like telecommuting or staying in for lunch. Points were awarded for each work-related round trip a person had that didn't involve driving in a car by yourself. Click "Read More" to find out how we did.

We had 14 people from our Kansas City office participate in the challenge. Several people rode the bus, a lot tried out carpoolings and a couple were even able to walk or ride their bike to work. As a first-time participant in the challenge, we did pretty well.

In the Kansas City area, 39 firms and organizations participated in this year's challenge. In average points per person for the team as a whole, we finished in 5th out of the 39 teams participating. In total number of points by a small firm, we finished 4th of th 17 in the small firm category.

While our result in the competition is great, our numbers regarding reducing pollution and saving money is even greater. The following numbers were done in just 2 months by a team of 14 people.

We reduced our single occupancy driving by 5264 miles.

Which comes out to saving 251 gallons of gas.

Saving a total $2,847.82 in gas and maintenance.

Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 4,868 pounds.

The challenge team consisted of Allyson, Amanda, Amy, Brian, Bruce, Erich, Jana, Joel, Julie, Kathy, Kirk, Matt, Rhonda and Sommer.
